Hello and welcome to another weekend of the Banana Meter! For those not aware of how this works, let me explain it to you. First, our critics check out a film. Then, they rate it on our scale of 0-100%, we gather the percentage from all of your critics and that’s how we get our rating on the Banana Meter.
What is the Banana Meter scale, you ask?
When a film hits above 85% or higher from our critics, it means it hit Bonafide Bananas status.
When a film hits between 55-84% or higher from our critics, it means it hit Ripe status.
When the film hits under 55%, it means it hit Sour Status.
Our next film to hit the Banana Meter is Marry Me

It’s nothing if not predictable, but Marry Me is a charming delight from start-to-finish; it’s the cinematic comfort food we all need right now.

Say “YES! YES! YES!” to Marry Me this weekend as Jennifer Lopez seals her “Queen of Rom Com” crown with not only some great acting, but she sings, she dances herself right into our hearts with this one.

How does one review what feels like a YouTube video that somehow made it into theaters? I’m not sure. I’ll just say I found myself laughing more at the side comments the Jackass crew made to each other rather than laughing at the actual stunts.

Banana Meter Rating: 50%
Marry Me has plenty of fun moments, but it lacks the tension and sizzling chemistry necessary to seal the deal. It owes any success to the star power of Jennifer Lopez and the fans that will show up, expecting something as tantalizing and as fun as The Wedding Planner or The Back-up Plan.
Jordan Woodson
Banana Meter Rating: 79%
“Marry Me” proves that J. Lo is still the queen of romcoms. It’s nothing you haven’t seen before, but its writing, directing and performances (especially from Sarah Silverman) elevate it into something extremely charming and hilarious.

The film really shouldn’t work, but Kat Coiro makes it work allowing ‘Marry Me’ to be the first big surprise of 2022. Owen Wilson brings the charm, but Jennifer Lopez stands out giving one of her best performances to date. Formulaic at times, but this is a fun and engaging rom-com that works. Can’t forget to mention those songs!

Marry Me is a kinetic collection of romantic, comedic, and musical moments that amount to more than enough appeal to create a pleasant journey and viewing experience. Honestly, that’s all it needs to be to succeed.

Marry Me is a strong return to form for the romantic comedy genre. The chemistry between Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson makes the film truly standout.

The perfect V-DAY FILM TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND! Lopez & Wilson sweep!
Edward Douglas
Banana Meter Rating: 80%
Never promises to reinvent the rom-com wheel, but having Lopez playing a reinvented version of herself with all sorts of catchy new tunes makes it a worthwhile addition to the genre either way.

The trailers don’t do the film or its cast justice. Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson play off each other beautifully in a film that is fun, has plenty of heart and offers some solid original musical numbers. This is the perfect date night this Valentine’s Day.

“Marry Me” isn’t funny enough to work solely as a romantic comedy. The performances by Lopez and Wilson, the songs (there’s great ones sung by J-Lo throughout), and the heart this film operates with throughout- that’s why “Marry Me” is a film to watch with someone you love.

Marry Me is a ludicrous rom-com filled with a few catchy (and insipid) pop songs, it does have some funny and endearing moments. The chemistry between JLo and Owen Wilson is good but the movie is thirty minutes too long.
Adriano Caporusso

Marry Me is far from the worst rom-com I’ve seen with Jennifer Lopez in it, I’ll give it that. Her and Owen Wilson did have some lovely chemistry together that made me smile, but sadly the movie is absurdly predictable and not funny.

Marry Me may be unremarkable in it’s storytelling but the the unlikely coupling of Wilson and Lopez makes for chemistry you would not expect.

A look at unformulaic love using all the best tropes of rom-com. A great spin on the classic genre that’s lifted by the endless charm of its leads. The music is inconsistent, but there’s still some great songs in this one too. Definitely worth the watch!

A typical recipe for a rom-com with an odd couple learning to fall in love, this can only work with good casting. Thankfully, Owen Wilson & Jennifer Lopez’s chemistry overcome the flaws & clichés, Marry Me grew on me as it went along, it’s the right amount of cheese.

In retrospect, it probably wouldn’t have worked without the indelible chemistry brought by Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson. We know exactly where this thing is going, but we’re more interested in the characters bonding, rather than the actual plot itself.

Marry Me is a cute rom-com that will cheer you up this Valentine’s Day. The married at first sight storyline is simple, but J. Lo and Owen Wilson’s sweet chemistry is hard to resist. Consensus = Cute!
