Where does Minions The Rise of Gru land on the Banana Meter?

Hello and welcome to another weekend of the Banana Meter! For those not aware of how this works, let me explain it to you. First, our critics check out a film. Then, they rate it on our scale of 0-100%, we gather the percentage from all of your critics and that’s how we get our rating on the Banana Meter.

What is the Banana Meter scale, you ask?

When a film hits above 85% or higher from our critics, it means it hit Bonafide Bananas status.
When a film hits between 55-84% or higher from our critics, it means it hit Ripe status.
When the film hits under 55%, it means it hit Sour Status.

Our next film to hit the Banana Meter is Minions The Rise of Gru

Here is what our Ripe Banana Critics are saying about the film:

Louisa Moore

Banana Meter Rating: 70%

A silly, goofy animated winner that’s unapologetically made with the kiddos in mind.

Keeping it all straight is not hard or significant but The Rise of Gru is a lot of predictable and wild Minion hijinx and that was enough to make me happy.

Going into Minions: The Rise of Gru expecting anything more than 87 minutes of just outright silliness and stupid Minion antics for the kids would be a mistake. Those things are exactly what the movie is built on, and that’s exactly what the movie gives you in sizeable quantities. What more could you ask for?

I went into this with low expectations. Overall, this wasn’t bad. The animation is well done, some of the jokes made laugh, and it was done in a timely manner. A pleasant surprise.

Though there are some chuckles, the new entry/prequel into the Despicable Me/Minions franchise is both unfunny, lifeless and dull and plays it so safe that it’s almost afraid to be anything more than a tepid dumpster fire. Time to put the series out to pasture.

Minions: The Rise of Gru is a definitive “pass the time” film. A fun enough watch that can play in the background, only asking the viewer to chuckle at a joke now and again. But thankfully, through the short runtime, I did find myself caring more about our little yellow friends more than I ever had before.

An absolute fever dream of a film. I’m still not entirely sure what I watched, but I witnessed this film in an IMAX theater filled with drunk adults, so the experience was at least memorable.

The yella fellas are back with a funky ’70s setting & amped-up laughs, it’s a prequel-sequel that delivers.

Minions: The Rise of Gru delivers precisely what one would expect, for better or worse – mindless plot strands with chaotic slapstick sequences.

Harmless enough and (thankfully) has a running time of less than 80 minutes, so it never wears out its welcome the way other animated movies frequently do.

Those yellow oddballs are back and are trying to prove themselves with their young boss. The comedic anarchy in their antics makes up for the lack of depth in the story.

This sequel is a complete turnaround from the first and delivers a compelling story as well as origin for Gru. This is the funniest movie I’ve seen all year. An absolute blast.

Minions: The Rise Of Gru is basically what you think it is. A couple chuckles aside, I didn’t really find much that non-children will enjoy in this.

The “Despicable” franchise has yet to find the same spark that made the first film somewhat appealing. Rise of Gru is too obnoxious for adults and belittling to kids’ entertainment.

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU sure has some cute, funny moments. The amusing vocal work from Steve Carell & Pierre Coffin continues to be the franchise’s highlight. But would it kill these films to put more effort into a compelling story? Mercifully, the runtime is kept short. Kids will still love it regardless.
