Then, they rate it on our scale of 0-100%, we gather the percentage from all of your critics and that’s how we get our rating on the Banana Meter.
What is the Banana Meter scale, you ask?
When a film hits above 85% or higher from our critics, it means it hit Bonafide Bananas status.
When a film hits between 55-84% or higher from our critics, it means it hit Ripe status.
When the film hits under 55%, it means it hit Sour Status.

A silly, goofy animated winner that’s unapologetically made with the kiddos in mind.

Keeping it all straight is not hard or significant but The Rise of Gru is a lot of predictable and wild Minion hijinx and that was enough to make me happy.

Going into Minions: The Rise of Gru expecting anything more than 87 minutes of just outright silliness and stupid Minion antics for the kids would be a mistake. Those things are exactly what the movie is built on, and that’s exactly what the movie gives you in sizeable quantities. What more could you ask for?

I went into this with low expectations. Overall, this wasn’t bad. The animation is well done, some of the jokes made laugh, and it was done in a timely manner. A pleasant surprise.

Though there are some chuckles, the new entry/prequel into the Despicable Me/Minions franchise is both unfunny, lifeless and dull and plays it so safe that it’s almost afraid to be anything more than a tepid dumpster fire. Time to put the series out to pasture.

Minions: The Rise of Gru is a definitive “pass the time” film. A fun enough watch that can play in the background, only asking the viewer to chuckle at a joke now and again. But thankfully, through the short runtime, I did find myself caring more about our little yellow friends more than I ever had before.

An absolute fever dream of a film. I’m still not entirely sure what I watched, but I witnessed this film in an IMAX theater filled with drunk adults, so the experience was at least memorable.

Harmless enough and (thankfully) has a running time of less than 80 minutes, so it never wears out its welcome the way other animated movies frequently do.

MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU sure has some cute, funny moments. The amusing vocal work from Steve Carell & Pierre Coffin continues to be the franchise’s highlight. But would it kill these films to put more effort into a compelling story? Mercifully, the runtime is kept short. Kids will still love it regardless.
