Hello and welcome to another weekend of the Banana Meter! For those not aware of how this works, let me explain it to you. First, our critics check out a film. Then, they rate it on our scale of 0-100%, we gather the percentage from all of your critics and that’s how we get our rating on the Banana Meter.
What is the Banana Meter scale, you ask?
When a film hits above 85% or higher from our critics, it means it hit Bonafide Bananas status.
When a film hits between 55-84% or higher from our critics, it means it hit Ripe status.
When the film hits under 55%, it means it hit Sour Status.
Our next film to hit the Banana Meter is Cha Cha Real Smooth

Cha Cha Real Smooth is a cautionary tale for recent college grads like myself and an absolute gem.
Jordan Woodson

As a 22-year-old just out of college, this is a beautiful coming-of-age dramedy that is exactly the movie I needed right now.

Finishes with an uplifting, positive ending that’s irresistibly upbeat, and optimistic messaging like this is pure catnip for indie film audiences.

Cooper Raiff’s big, beautiful, sensitive is on full display in Cha Cha Real Smooth. An effortlessly charming and solemnly introspective sophmore effort.
Matt Neglia
Banana Meter Rating: 80%
CHA CHA REAL SMOOTH is not only a step up for Cooper Raiff from Shithouse but it also firmly cements him as a major new voice go be taken seriously. His sensitive direction, perceptive writing & natural chemistry with Dakota Johnson (who delivers her best work to date) is so warm & inviting. I loved every precious moment of this delicate & insightful look at finding yourself & what you desire, whether it’s in your 20s or your 30s.

Cha Cha is a pitch perfect meditation on what it is to have a cast of folks in different points in their lives, struggling to coexist, learn from each other, and love being together. Nobody instills the beating heart of life into a comedy these days quite like Cooper Raiff.

Cha Cha Real Smooth has to offer some effervescent charm and some lonely “figure out what the hell I’m going to do after college” blues with a funny and sincere script — as well as great chemistry from its cast — but it stumbles into repeated beats and feels aimless on most occasions.

If the film risks being relegated to mere indie fare, it’s an excellent example of that type, thanks to the raw emotions, charming performances, and open-hearted humanity.
Anthony Papetti
Banana Meter Rating: 90%
Cha Cha solidifies that Cooper Raiff is not a one-hit wonder but rather a new voice for his generation. Dakota Johnson delivers one of her best performances yet in this dramedy tailor-made for her.
Brian Skutle
Banana Meter Rating: 86%
Coming of age is a struggle at any time in your life in Cooper Raiff’s comedy-drama. What one doesn’t struggle with, however, is how winning the main performances are.

Dakota Johnson is great here and steals the show. Cooper Raiff does a nice job creating characters and a mood. I enjoyed much of this. It’s good but I felt like the third act waned a bit.

Jurassic World: Dominion is a step up from the previous installment, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, albeit saying that isn’t much since it still has plenty of drawbacks that make you reminisce about the original 1993 classic. Thank god for Dern, Neill, and Goldblum for pouring much-needed charisma onto the screen.

I really wanted to love this one, but I find it hard to say I even liked it. I don’t think its as bad as many are saying though. All we wanted to see was dinosaurs in our world. We ended up with an overlong, bloated, exposition heavy and convoluted mess. The only good aspects were the main cast and the dinosaur stuff mixed with Michael Giacchino’s masterful composing. I wanted more. I don’t hate it but I’m extremely disappointed that this is the note we had to end things on.

Somewhere along the way, Dominion stops feeling like a megabudget when-animals-attack movie and starts to feel cumbersome and self-important. Despite that, it remains superior to The Lost World and Fallen Kingdom.
Brian Skutle
Banana Meter Rating: 48%
Someone missed filling in some genome sequence gaps in this screenplay, but between the underground dinosaur trade and some haunting adventure sequences “Dominion” offers some dino-mite fun along the way.

Cha Cha Real Smooth is a wonderfully told coming-of-age that’s sure to strike a chord with people trying to figure out life, thanks to Cooper Raiff’s solid performance and direction, as well as a career-best performance from Dakota Johnson.

It’s lovely & soothing to witness this story’s simplicity unfold with Cooper Raiff wearing his heart on his sleeve in front & behind the camera. Earnest, awkward, relatable, intimate, charming & heartwarming.

‘Cha Cha Real Smooth’ is a beautiful rom com full of interesting characters, funny moments, a cool soundtrack, and a love story with its own twist. At its core, it’s a film about love and the difficulties we can face finding our own way in the world.

It may share its name with the song that was played at almost every school disco in the 2000s, but Cha Cha Real Smooth offers winning performances, a well-told coming of age story and a reminder of the fragility of the journey called life. If there is a flaw to the movie, it’s how it handles the subject of autism, a condition which is often mishandled in cinema.

Cooper Raiff has quickly become one of my favorites in the business and he tops his last feature with Cha Cha Real Smooth. He brings the charm to every moment, along with the fantastic chemistry he has with Dakota Johnson who turns in her best work. I loved every minute of this.

Featuring a full spectrum of emotions that crashes into you like waves, writer/director/star Cooper Raiff proves he’s a talent to watch from a successful follow up to his debut. Plain and simple: he gets it!

Cha Cha Real Smooth lived up to all the expectations that I had for it. Copper Raiff is a superstar, his writing, directing, and acting was all great and we’re all the things that made this film as good as it was. It was funny and very relatable and charming! Check it out!

A nice new version of the aimless-twenty-something-grows-up-thanks-to-an-older-woman story, Cha Cha Real Smooth is a great second effort from Cooper Raiff and features an excellent performance from Dakota Johnson.
Jack Walters
Banana Meter Rating: 80%
With Cha Cha Real Smooth, Cooper Raiff has proven himself once again to be one of the most interesting and promising up-and-coming voices in the world of comedy/drama. His writing is just as fresh and inventive as it’s always been, but his intense chemistry with Dakota Johnson makes this story a lot more weighted and impactful than he’s displayed in the past.
